Join Atlas Obscura Society D.C. and Dupont Underground for an exclusive tour both inside and out of the historic trolley tunnels underneath Dupont Circle.
Opening in 1949, the 75,000-square-foot subterranean trolley system full of tracks, tunnels, platforms, and passageways helped alleviate traffic and congestion. Thirteen years later, however, the entire trolley system shut down due to declining ridership. And for five decades—with the exception of a brief ill-fated food court—these tunnels lay unused and forgotten.
Today, the cultural organization Dupont Underground has transformed these long-ignored tunnels into an art space and a gathering place.
Our tour will cover part of the tunnels as well as views from outdoors (and above ground). We’ll be led by Founder Julian Hunt and Sarah Lerner, Director of Events, in discussing the past, present, and future of this underground relic.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
– Meet at the 19th Street entrance of Dupont Underground (next to Starbucks), marked by a bright red below-surface staircase.
– This event has two tour times. Please be aware of the time you selected. Each tour will be about 1.5 hours.
– A bar (cash and card) will be available at the end of the tour.
– There’s a significant amount of walking on fairly uneven surfaces, so please wear appropriate shoes and bring water.
– Street parking can be tough in and around Dupont Circle, so we recommend taking Metro (red line).
