DC Nitelife had the great pleasure and opportunity to sit down with the phenomenal, Dr. Shane Perrault, Ph.D., who is helping relationships and women of all walks of life.  Dr. Perrault took time out of his busy schedule to chat with me and share some of the things that he would like for all of us to know in order to have a healthy and successful relationship or to find the right match for us.  Dr. Perrault is so passionate about his journey that he wrote a book entitled:  “The Black MANual: Less Drama, More Love — a Single Woman’s Guide to Choosing Mr. Right.”

According to Dr. Perrault, when you are an African-American woman, the rules are different. You face a starkly disparate reality than your non-black counterparts.

Here are the startling facts. Whether you are single, divorced or widowed — Dr. Shane Perrault, Ph.D., has learned firsthand that “It is never too late to live happily ever after.” Throughout his work as a marital psychologist, he has found one of the key factors in relationship or marital success is choosing the right partner.

In this book, you will discover:

* When Mr. Right’s circumstances make him Mr. Wrong: 13 ways to distinguish game changers

from deal breakers

*You’ve found Mr. Right, now what?

* Date, move in, move on, or marriage.

Dr. Shane Perrault is the founder of African American Marriage Counseling, where he has provided relationship and marital therapy counseling to hundreds of couples since 2004.  He has been featured in Ebony and Essence magazines, the Washington Post; XM Radio, BET and TV One.

Dr. Shane Perrault, PhD wrote this book based on his experiences providing relationship and marital therapy to over 1,000 African American couples in private practice since 2004.  In his research and practice, he found African American women are:

  • 3X times more likely to never marry,
  • 2X as likely to divorce,
  • And are significantly more likely to earn the lion’s share of their household income.

While Steve Harvey and Hill Harper started the conversation, Dr. Shane provides unique psychological theories, insider tips, and unique strategies to facilitate the conversation – and empower women to lose Mr. Wrong and choose Mr. Right! Dr. Shane starts out by exploring how Black women find Mr. Right, even if they’ve been taught not to depend on a man. He sheds light on the psychology of why Mr. Wrong can feel so right. For example, he explores how and why women employ an “I’m OK, You’re not OK – but I can fix you” approach to picking Mr. Wrong. Next, he makes it clear that all nice guys or bad boys aren’t created equally (some bad boys are good catches, while some nice guys are bad catches). Although he doesn’t believe in one-size fits all categories, he provides insights that can help women get the best of both worlds: a bad guy who is nice; or a nice guy who is fun. Some sections of the book that readers have loved – and been shocked by – include:

  • The Law of Attraction: you get you more of what you are, and not necessarily what you ask for · Using Feng Shui to make room in your life for the man you ask for
  • The importance of having only 3 things on your list of criteria for Mr. Right
  • Seven rules of engagement when you earn more than your man, including strategies for appraising ways he adds value beyond his income (like Michelle Obama initially did with the summer intern named Barack Obama)
  • The new extramarital affair – financial infidelity
  • Deal breakers and game changers that may make Mr. Right’s circumstances render him Mr. Wrong.

In the second part of the book, whether you are single, divorced or widowed, Dr. Shane discusses specific ground rules and methods for maintaining a mutually fulfilling relationship with your Mr. Right, yourself and your blended family should you have one. He takes the cliché “love yourself first,” from an idea into a blueprint for transformation.

Finally, while the divorce rate is 45% for most Americans, it jumps to 65% when one spouse has a child from another relationship, and to 70% if they both have children from previous relationships. Dr. Shane provides strategies and piercing tips for dating with kids, and blending your family should you decide to get married.

DC Nitelife highly recommends this book for your collection and also as a gift for that special someone who may need the great and informative advice from Dr. Shane.
