Nothing is created by osmosis and change does not occur in an instant. Real change, the kind of change that impacts the future of the generations of people that have yet to be born occurs over a long period of time and usually because of the actions of numerous people working collectively and collaboratively to ensure that a mission is fulfilled, or a policy or bill will get passed into law that will thereby help the lives of all of humanity.
When I think of celebrating the history of Black people, I think about the shoulders that we stand upon of those great leaders who came before us. Leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Thurgood Marshall and countless others who have sacrificed their very lives in order that many of us would be able to live in a world with equal rights in this country.
When I think of celebrating the history of Black people, I believe that every person should simply say ‘Thank You’ because of the actions of our ancestors and former leaders. Because of their efforts to change the world as they knew it into a better world that would welcome us into is, their actions opened a door which was previously locked, a law was made which allowed someone to have access to a new opportunity such as better education, better public schools and better neighborhoods. I say thank you to all those leaders that cared about how the present world they lived in would impact the lives of their people who would be living in that same world during the days ahead. Those leaders that said, I want to take a stand to make a difference in the lives of those who have yet to be born to ensure that you and I would have a better chance to create the life that we desired.
It doesn’t matter what your career is today, if it were not for those that came before us, we may not be able to complete the necessary education criteria to become that surgeon, the judge, a doctor, a lawyer or a business owner or even the President of the United States.
We presently are standing on the shoulders of the great leaders that came before us. We are also the great men and women who knows that there is work that still needs to be done to ensure the equal rights and fair treatment of all people. It is us that are continuing to do the work today that will serve generations of people that will come tomorrow, and they will enjoy the benefits of our labor, just as we are grateful to be the recipients of the change implemented by our ancestors.
Stand tall with courage in your heart and strength in your body knowing that the answer for the ills of this world are living within your creative mind and waiting for you to connect with others to take action that will impact the future lives of those who are coming behind us. Let us all remember to say ‘Thank You’ as we reach higher towards creating a better future for us all.
